Training data
Who can use this feature?
- This feature is available for all users.
What is training data
Training data is everything your AI is allowed to answer from. It sits on five tabs.
| Tab | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Knowledge base | Your own answers: questions, links, files, and the FAQs and pages synced from your store |
| Products | Which products your AI can discuss and recommend |
| Collections | Which collections it can browse |
| Discounts | Which discount codes it can offer |
| Markets | Per-market settings for stores selling in more than one market |
This page covers the Knowledge base tab. The others have their own guides.
How to read the Knowledge base header
The header counts what your AI is working with.
- N entries: everything in the knowledge base, whatever its status.
- N Live · N Off: how many your AI answers from, and how many are switched off. A Draft count appears only when you have drafts.
- N issues: click it to open a list of what needs attention.

Chatty flags an entry when it conflicts with another or could not be indexed. It also flags entries under 80 characters, over 10,000 characters, or untouched for 90 days. Each line in the list links to the entries it counted.
How to sync FAQs and pages from your store
Sync from your store keeps the knowledge base in step with content you already wrote on your storefront.
- Go to AI agent → Training data → Knowledge base.
- Open Sync from your store.
- Next to FAQs, click Sync FAQs.
- Next to Store pages, click Sync store pages.
Expected result: Synced FAQs go straight to Live. Store pages arrive as entries your AI can answer from.
The FAQs line reads synced · ready to sync · need review. Only the ready ones import. An FAQ waits in need review when it is empty, unreadable, or repeats a question you already have. It also waits there when it contradicts another entry. Open those FAQs on your store, fix them, and sync again.
Store pages sync is limited to 10 runs a day. At the limit the button turns off until the next day.
The first store-pages sync picks your ten most useful information and policy pages. Later syncs only refresh those same pages. A page you publish afterwards is not picked up on its own, so add it as a link instead.
How to add a question, a link, or a file
- In Manage data, click Add knowledge. The button reads Close while the panel is open.
- Stay on the Basic tab.
- To add a question, fill in Question and Answer, then click Add. For example,
Do you ship internationally?withYes, we ship to over 50 countries. - To add a link, paste it in the URL box, one per line, then click Add.
- To add a file, drop a
.csv,.json,.txtor.pdffile, then click Add. - Repeat until everything you want is in the To add list.
- Click Save in the bar at the top.

Expected result: The entries appear in Manage data and go Live, so your AI can answer from them right away.
One save takes up to 100 questions and links, and up to 20 files at 2 MB each. An answer needs at least three characters.
A link is read once, when you add it. Chatty does not check it again, so re-add the link when that page changes.
How to have AI write the entries for you
Advanced — AI reads for you takes a wall of text and turns it into question and answer pairs.
- Click Add knowledge, then open the Advanced — AI reads for you tab.
- Paste your text: a policy, a product sheet, an internal note.
- Click Save & process in background.
Expected result: Chatty splits the text into entries and saves each one as Draft. Read them, fix anything wrong, then set them live.
Advanced works with pasted text. Upload files on the Basic tab instead.
How to set an entry live, draft, or off
Every entry carries one of three statuses.
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Live | Customers are receiving this content |
| Draft | Only used when you test inside the app, customers never see it |
| Off | Not used anywhere |
To change one entry, open it from the table and pick a status under Status.

To change several at once, scroll to Manage data and tick the entries you want. An action bar appears above the table with Go live, Turn off, Re-index, Assign topics and Delete.

Expected result: The badge on each entry updates, and your AI answers only from Live entries.
The action bar only appears once at least one entry is ticked. If the Add to knowledge base panel is open, click Close on it first so the table is in view.
Entries your AI drafts on its own, from self-learning or from the Advanced tab, start as Draft. They stay unused until you set them live.
How to find and manage an entry
Manage data lists every source with filters for All, Q&As, URLs, Files and From FAQ. Pages synced from your store sit under URLs, and From FAQ shows everything that came from a FAQ sync.
Each row shows where the entry came from: Manual, CSV import, URL, File, Shopify page, FAQ sync, Agent API, Chatty Lab, Self-learning or Advanced import. Entries your AI wrote itself carry an AI draft badge.

Open an entry to edit its question, answer and status. Topics takes your own labels, separated by commas, for example shipping, returns. They show as badges in the table. Source tells you where the entry came from and cannot be changed.
The row menu holds Edit, Re-index, Compare with duplicate and Delete; Re-index also sits inside the edit window. It rebuilds the search index for that entry and does not fetch the page again.
Click Export to download your knowledge base as a CSV. Choose everything, or only the live entries.
Expected result: Chatty downloads a CSV carrying Type, Topic, Question, Answer and Status.
How much you can store
| Plan | Links and files | Questions |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 20 | 100 |
| Basic | 200 | 5,000 |
| Pro | 2,000 | Unlimited |
| Plus | Unlimited | Unlimited |
Links and files share one allowance, counted whatever their status. Questions count only while they are live, and FAQs synced from your store never count.
Past the limit Chatty tells you You've reached the data limit for AI training. Turn off or delete entries you no longer need, then add again.
Why is an entry flagged when it looks fine?
Chatty flags anything under 80 characters or over 10,000, and anything untouched for 90 days. A short entry rarely holds enough for a good answer, and a long one buries the point. Open it, tighten it, and the flag clears.
Why does my AI still answer from something I deleted?
Check the status rather than the list. An entry set to Off stays in the table but is never used, and an entry still Live keeps answering. If you deleted a FAQ on your store, sync FAQs again so the knowledge base drops its copy.
